Hebrew Roots is not a cult or doctrine of devils, as some have erroneously claimed. There are quacks, maniacs, those who are confused, and people with serious religious “baggage” in all fellowships, including the Hebrew Roots Movement. That’s just a sad fact. However, true HR folks are deeply grounded in the Word of God and diligently seek His complete Truth.
The genuine Hebrew Roots Movement is about restoration. The divorce of Christianity from Judaism is one of the most devastating tactics the adversary ever instituted. Christianity is not a “new religion” started by the Apostle Paul. Christianity, in its true sense not what it has become in popular Western culture, is the fulfillment of Judaism.
Hebrew Roots is about believing, honoring, and obeying the Whole Word of God from start to finish. We understand that what is commonly called “the New Testament” is not the new covenant, not a new religion, but is the further explanation on what is commonly called “the Old Testament”. These terms (new and old testament) are divisive and not appropriate. They became popular with the divorce of Christianity from Judaism and keep the separation alive in people’s minds. Truly, there is NOTHING in the Gospels or Apostolic writings that contradicts the Torah, Prophets and Writings of the Tanakh.
Salvation was never by legalism, but has always been through grace by faith. Loving, willing obedience is the evidence of salvation, the fruit. Throughout time, YHWH, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, brings greater understanding and more clarity, but He does not change. Abraham was saved by faith through grace although he never knew the Messiah’s name. Yeshua’s apostles were obedient to the Torah, including the dietary laws, Saturday Sabbath and feasts of the Lord, to their dying days.
For anyone who doesn’t believe this due to what they’ve been taught in Western Christian churches, I challenge you to pray for clarity on this, sincerely open your heart to YHWH’s truth, and test these things for yourself. Take a look at some of the free 119 Ministries video teachings (link on this site’s blogroll to the right). Read the Bible without the preconceived notions from church fathers. Study the Hebrew context of the Bible, Hebrew idioms and culture, to see what is really being said. Some things are MUCH different than what we’ve been told.
As David H. Stern, Ph.D. states in the introduction to his book “Restoring the Jewishness of the Gospel: A Message for Christians”:
When the Church proclaims a Gospel without its Jewishness restored, she is at best failing to proclaim “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27). At worst, she may be communicating what Paul called “another Gospel” (Galatians 1:6-9). Moreover, not only Jews suffer from this off-target preaching – Gentiles suffer too. Therefore I believe I am focusing on an extremely serious problem which has not received from Christians the attention it deserves.
Let us all pray for Adonai’s perfect wisdom and clarity and avoid divisiveness whenever possible. There are many who are coming to this understanding and are confused by what they are hearing about Hebrew Roots. See the sites listed on this site’s blogroll links (to the right) for good teachings and insights. But remember trust no one’s insight completely, always compare what you hear to the Word of God. Shalom!
