March Mitzvot Madness Day 22
As modern society rushes further away from Biblical values, there has been an ever increasing popular acceptance of things detestable to Adonai. Sorcery isn’t just in the movies, or Harry Potter books. It is a regular part of Western culture. Necromancy, which is talking to or consulting the spirit of dead people, consulting horoscopes, reading tarot cards, “playing” with a Ouija Board, and hypnotism are just a few examples of things we should avoid.
Sadly, so many people do not guard their minds, hearts, eyes, ears, or spirits from anything! They often say “I can handle it” or “it doesn’t affect me”. I think the verses below make it clear this is not acceptable to YHWH. He gives the death penalty for sorcerers.
Do you recall the story in 1 Samuel 28 where King Saul visits a sorceress and has her consult the spirit of the deceased Prophet Samuel for advice? The last verse listed below tells the “rest of the story” where Adonai killed Saul for doing this. We should take these matters seriously in our desire to obey YHWH.
There must not be found among you anyone who makes his son or daughter pass through fire, a diviner, a soothsayer, an enchanter, a sorcerer, a spell-caster, a consulter of ghosts or spirits, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is detestable to Adonai, and because of these abominations Adonai your God is driving them out ahead of you. You must be wholehearted with Adonai your God. For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, listen to soothsayers and diviners; but you, Adonai your God does not allow you to do this. ~~ Deuteronomy 18: 10-14
Do not practice divination or fortune-telling. ~~ Leviticus 19: 26b
Do not turn to spirit-mediums or sorcerers; don’t seek them out, to be defiled by them; I am Adonai your God. ~~ Leviticus 19: 31
A man or woman who is a spirit-medium or sorcerer must be put to death; they are to stone them to death; their blood will be on them. ~~ Leviticus 20: 27
You are not to permit a sorceress to live. ~~ Exodus 22: 18
So Sha’ul (King Saul) died for the transgression he committed against Adonai, because of the word of Adonai that he did not keep and because he sought the counsel of a spirit instead of consulting Adonai. Therefore Adonai put him to death and turned the rulership over to David the son of Yishai. ~~ 1 Chronicles 10: 13-14
