MMM Day 23: Three Pilgrimage Festivals

March Mitzvot Madness Day 23

When there was a physical Temple, all males were commanded to go to Jerusalem, bringing gifts from their harvest, at three specific times each year.  These are called the pilgrimage festivals, since attendance (by at least the males) was required.  Without a physical temple today, obedience to this mitzvot (the pilgrimage part) isn’t possible.  However, the prophet Zechariah (see below) indicates that these feasts were never to be erased since Yeshua’s millennium reign still includes mandatory attendance, at least for Sukkot.

Three times a year, you are to observe a festival for me. Keep the festival of matzah: for seven days, as I ordered you, you are to eat matzah at the time determined in the month of Aviv; for it was in that month that you left Egypt. No one is to appear before me empty-handed. Next, the festival of harvest, the firstfruits of your efforts sowing in the field; and last, the festival of ingathering, at the end of the year, when you gather in from the fields the results of your efforts. Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Lord, Adonai. ~~ Exodus 23: 14-17

Three times a year all your men are to appear in the presence of Adonai your God in the place which he will choose — at the festival of matzah, at the festival of Shavu‘ot and at the festival of Sukkot. They are not to show up before Adonai empty-handed, but every man is to give what he can, in accordance with the blessing Adonai your God has given you. ~~ Deuteronomy 16: 16-17

Finally, everyone remaining from all the nations that came to attack Yerushalayim will go up every year to worship the king, Adonai-Tzva’ot, and to keep the festival of Sukkot.  If any of the families of the earth does not go up to Yerushalayim to worship the king, Adonai-Tzva’ot, no rain will fall on them.  If the family of Egypt doesn’t go up, if they refuse to come, they will have no [annual] overflow [from the Nile]; moreover, there will be the plague with which Adonai will strike the nations that don’t go up to keep the festival of Sukkot.  This will be Egypt’s punishment and the punishment of all the nations that don’t go up to keep the festival of Sukkot. ~~ Zechariah 14: 16-19
