Choose Wisely

We all make dozens of choices every day.  We choose what to eat, drink, wear, and say.  We choose how to think about little things and big things.  We choose to clean up after ourselves or not.  We choose to take responsibility for ourselves or to blame others.  We choose to spend time with our family or not.  We choose to spend time with God, to read our Bibles, to pray, or not.

Many might say “I just don’t have time” for (fill in the blank).  That is one of mankind’s most utilized excuses.  However, the fact is that we have to “make” time for what is important.  We will never automatically “have” time for everything.  Our actions prove this out.  There are instances when everyone has a no-obligation day.  Suddenly, we have plenty of time, no pressing obligations or deadlines.  But STILL we choose not to do the same things we say we don’t have time for…

So, in reality the truth is this.  Everyone has some degree of choice, even those in prison or held captive.  Our thoughts are our own choice.  All action is preceded by a thought that initiated the action.

Why do we choose poorly so often?  Famous motivational speaker and author Zig Ziglar calls it “stinking thinking” and that term provides an appropriate visual.  So many of our bad choices germinate directly from the seeds of bad thoughts, watered daily by negativity.  Get hold of your thoughts, grab the negative ones and beat them into submission or toss them into a mental garbage disposal and get rid of them.  (Aren’t we admonished to take all thoughts captive unto Messiah?)  Don’t allow habits to continue when they are destructive.  And, don’t forget that Holy Scripture instructs us to think positively.  Our YHWH is the originator of positive attitudes and thinking.  Follow His lead and see how your life will change for the better.  Shalom!

Don’t worry about anything; on the contrary, make your requests known to God by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving. Then God’s shalom, passing all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with the Messiah Yeshua. In conclusion, brothers, focus your thoughts on what is true, noble, righteous, pure, lovable or admirable, on some virtue or on something praiseworthy. Keep doing what you have learned and received from me, what you have heard and seen me doing; then the God who gives shalom will be with you. ~~ Philippians 4: 6-9

For although we do live in the world, we do not wage war in a worldly way; because the weapons we use to wage war are not worldly. On the contrary, they have God’s power for demolishing strongholds. We demolish arguments and every arrogance that raises itself up against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey the Messiah. And when you have become completely obedient, then we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience.                    ~~ 2 Corinthians 10: 3-6
